Scientists have long understood how lightning appears, but the exact atmospheric phenomena that cause them in the thunders remained a mystery.
Scientists from the University of Pennsylvania (USA) have found a powerful chain reaction, which probably causes lightning. This was reported by the press service of the university.
In their study, scientists have combined mathematical modeling of conditions in thunders with the results of field observations collected by other research groups using ground sensors, satellites and high -speed reconnaissance aircraft.
They found that strong electric fields in a thunderstorm are an acceleration that exist there electrons that are cut into air molecules, forming X -Rans and initiate a stream of additional electrons and photons with high energy, which creates an “perfect storm” from which lightning is born.
This phenomenon, known as a ground gamut or gamma, or “dark lightning”, was first recorded in 1991. It consists of invisible, natural outbreaks of the X -RAYS and related radio radiation.
We showed how the electrons are accelerated by strong electric fields in the thunders, produce X -RAYS in a collision with air molecules, such as nitrogen and oxygen, and create an avalanche of electrons producing high -energy photons that initiate lightning, the researchers have promised.
According to scientists, this model combines “X -Rans, electric fields and electronic avalanches”.
