The Chinese army posted on social media a message “Prepare for battle!”, amid the possible arrival of Nancy Pelosi on the island, which Beijing considers its territory.
The official account of the 80th Army of the People’s Liberation Army of China on Weibo (the Chinese equivalent of Twitter and Facebook), amid reports of a possible visit by Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan on Friday, July 29, published a controversial message.
“Prepare for battle!” said the 80th Army of the People’s Liberation Army of China.
Moreover, official Beijing is ready to stop the dialogue at the highest level with Washington, in case the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Congress Nancy Pelosi visits Taiwan. This is what Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said in a briefing on Friday, July 29.
According to him, Beijing will provide strong opposition if the established framework is broken.
“If Washington dares to violate the framework we have established, it will immediately be strongly opposed. The American side will be responsible for all possible consequences,” the official insisted.
He also recalled that on July 28, Chinese President Xi Jinping and United States President Joe Biden discussed all issues of interest to them, including the Taiwan problem.
“We have said many times on the American side that we are definitely against Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan,” he added.
Chinese authorities have previously called Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan a “red line” and threatened “strong opposition” if it is violated.
The American publications Bloomberg and NBC, citing their sources, reported that on July 29, the tour of the official delegation of the US Congress led by Nancy Pelosi will begin in Asian countries.
Washington Post reporter Josh Rogin said Speaker Pelosi’s trip to Taiwan was expected at the start of her Asian tour.
It will be remembered that Pelosi’s planned visit to Taiwan seriously aggravated the tension between China and the United States. Official Beijing is demanding the trip be canceled as it considers it interference in China’s internal affairs. The day before, China said that if Pelosi travels to Taiwan, the Chinese army “will not sit down.”
In addition, the Pentagon is preparing contingency plans for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan.
