7 thousand steps per day give almost the same health benefits as 10 thousand steps.
This is evidenced by the results of a large -scale study conducted by scientists from the University of Sydney, reports the preliminary maintenance of the university.
We know that the number of steps per day is associated with the expected life expectancy, but now we also have evidence that walking at least 7,000 steps per day can significantly improve eight basic health indicators, including reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases, dementia and depressive symptoms.
As part of the study, scientists analyzed 57 studies conducted from 2014 to 2025 in more than ten countries, including Australia, the USA, Great Britain and Japan. They studied the influence of various steps per day on the likelihood of death from cardiovascular diseases and cancer, as well as on the development of diseases such as cancer, type 2 diabetes, dementia and depression.
Based on our results, which evaluated health consequences in several areas that have not been previously investigated, we came to the conclusion that 7,000 steps per day are a realistic goal, ”the researchers said.
Scientists emphasize that 7000 steps per day are a more achievable standard for people who are difficult to follow traditional recommendations on exercises.
However, for those who cannot reach 7 thousand steps per day, even a slight increase in the number of steps, for example, from 2 to 4 thousand steps per day associated with a significant improvement in health, ”the researchers add.
Participants analyzed by Australian researchers wore devices for calculating steps, such as steps, accelerometers and fitness trackers to track the number of steps that they took daily. Researchers analyzed the results of people from those who took only 2000 steps per day. It turned out that:
- A significant improvement in health was observed when people increased the average number of steps per day from 2 thousand to 5-7 thousand steps;
- 7 thousand steps per day reduced the risk of death by 47%, which was almost identical to the advantage that was observed when walking 10 thousand steps per day;
- The risk of dementia was reduced by 38% with a passage of 7 thousand steps per day, and by 10 thousand steps an additional decrease was only 7%;
- The risk of type 2 diabetes was reduced by 22% by 10 thousand steps per day and by 27% by 12 thousand steps.
For people who are already leading an active lifestyle, 10 thousand steps per day are magnificent, ”the researchers summarize. – But after 7000 steps, additional advantages for most health indicators that we investigated were insignificant.
Any 500 profiles are strewn per day.
