Azerbaijan prepares a international lawsuit against the Russian Federation due to Azal’s Azal accident

Azerbaijan is preparing to file a lawsuit against Russia in connection with the Azerbaijan Airlines (Azal) aircraft, a report on Saturday, July 19, citing a statement by Azerbaijan president Ilham Aliyev.

He noted that the situation around the incident with the plane was clear. According to the President, within seven months the Azerbaijani side did not receive clear answers from the Russian side about the conditions of the tragedy. The Azerbaijan General Prosecutor repeatedly discussed the chairman of the Russian investigative committee with requests, but received only one common answer: “The investigation continues.”

Aliyev called such a position that Azerbaijan’s intention was ineffective and emphasized to appeal to international courts. He added that he hopes to achieve justice, even if the process lasts years. For example, he remembered the investigation of Malaysian Boeing’s disaster, which lasted more than ten years.

The president also brought the specific requirements: the official recognition of the guilt, the penalty of the offender knocking on the aircraft, the payment of compensation to the families of the dead and the payment of Azal’s losses for the loss of aircraft.

Keep in mind that the tragedy took place on December 25, 2024. The Embraer’s aircraft, owned by Azerbaijan Airlines and conducted a flight from Baku to Grozny, fell under the flow of Russia near Grozny. The aircraft tried an emergency landing near Aktau (Kazakhstan). There are 67 people on board, including five crew members. In total, 38 people were killed, including 42 citizens of Azerbaijan, 16 – Russia, 6 – Kazakhstan and 3 – Kyrgyzstan.

Earlier, the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev said the responsibility for disaster lies in representatives of the Russian Federation.
