In LVIV, doctors grew up part of the liver in the body of a 10-month-old child from Bukovina. These are individual cases in the world.
The tumor spread to all four sectors of the liver. The child could not be transplanted from his weight of 8 kg. Therefore, doctors chose Alpps surgery, which was never performed.
Demianchik’s malignant tumor was found after 4 months. Then the child lost his appetite, stopped gaining weight, and his skin disappeared.
Local doctors sent a family to the lion’s colleagues from the Hospital of St. Nicholas, where the only center for cholestatic diseases in children operates in the western regions of Ukraine.
Experts performed a biopsy, which confirmed – the child has a huge malignant liver tumor. It occupies 8 centimeters 12 (the length of the organ itself) and applies to all four sectors of the liver. And its volume was localized in the center – where the main ships are held. Therefore, Demianchyk was classified as patients with high risk.
The child could die in just a few weeks. Therefore, doctors immediately started chemotherapy. And in four months of treatment, they managed to reduce the size of the tumor twice. Nevertheless, the threat of life has not gone anywhere. A more cardinal decision was required. Only the operation can save the child. The option with liver transplantation disappeared. Because the Demunchik weighed only 8 kg, and with such a weight of survival after the transplantation is critically low.
Another option is a very difficult Alpps operation, which our doctors never performed. The new method and every year in the world for children only have a few such interventions. Alpps includes the resection of the cardinal, that is, almost complete removal of the liver. After consulting with Polish colleagues, Pediatric surgeons LVIV are still deciding that they resort to a new method. This is the only way to compete for the life of Demyanhak.
Alpps treatment was prepared for about a month. And here is the day. At the first stage, the surgeons divided parts of the liver into a healthy and affected tumor. And the vessels that had a “sore” area were transplanted so that the tumor stopped growing, but the organ continued to fulfill its function.
15% of individual healthy liver tissues a week after the intervention has grown four times! This means that doctors managed to grow a sufficient amount of tissues for the next stage of surgery from a critical small volume. Such cases are even alone in the world. Thus, now surgeons can take the removal of part of the body affected by the neoplasm.
Until the second stage, children’s experts included the head of the Center for Congeric Surgery of the Saint -Pantileon Roman Domashich. In the end, Novozhir partially hit the low vein, which removes purified blood from the organ. In order not to stop the blood circulation of the child, the ship had to be replaced very quickly – less than half an hour. An experienced heart surgeon coped in 14 minutes! And children’s specialists Alexander Kalinchuk, Andrey Dvoravevich and Denis Konoplitskoye were able to completely remove the sick part of the liver.
