Health networks around the world detected 6.3 million cases of COVID-19 last week, very similar to the previous seven days, and the death toll was 11,000, up 1%, according to the World Health Organization epidemiological report (WHO).

WHO Director General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesusshortly before the release of these data, he warned that the number of cases in the world had doubled in the past six weeks, in connection with which he asked to redouble efforts and not curtail operations against the pandemic, which many countries have established since 2020.

Europe was the region with the most cases from 11 to 17 July (2.7 million), although on the continent they fell by 16%, while in America there were 1.7 million infections (9% more), and in East Asia and the Pacific 1.4 million, which is a strong 37% increase.

Death stats have topped them again America with 5470 deaths (up 7% from the previous week), followed by Europe with 3311 (down 14%) and the Eastern Asia-Pacific Republic with 1366, down 3%.

Caution

WHO insists that numbers, especially infection data, should be treated with caution as diagnoses have dropped significantly in many countries due to the spread of mild cases.

The countries with the most confirmed cases last week were the United States (866,000), France (757,000), Italy (718,000), Germany (602,000) and Japan (559,000).

The United States (2345), Brazil (1751), Italy (784), Spain (610) and China (576) lead in the number of deaths. (EFE)
