Senior leaders of the British Conservative Party support Johnson’s candidacy for the post of NATO Secretary General.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who previously resigned, could become the next Secretary General of NATO. This was reported by The Telegraph.
It is noted that Johnson has long been considered for the position of NATO Secretary General due to the lack of confidence of the US in the EU leaders who lead the Alliance.
According to the publication, senior leaders of the British Conservative Party support Johnson’s candidacy for the position of Secretary General.
MP Marc Francois believes that Johnson’s political legacy will be controversial for years to come, but one thing that is clearly undeniable is his absolutely unwavering support for Ukraine.
“If he applied for the post of NATO Secretary General, I suspect that he could count on President Zelensky for a recommendation,” said Marc Francois.
At the same time, the former commander of the British army, Lord Dunnutt, said that he would not support Johnson’s candidacy because of his character.
“Undoubtedly, he has done a lot of good things, and our full support for Ukraine is incredible. But I’m afraid that these are personal things, dishonesty, lack of trust. Honestly, we don’t want to put Boris Johnson on the international stage for new ridicule. He is a disgrace to the country ” Dannatt said.
According to a source in the British Ministry of Defense, not all EU countries approve Johnson’s candidacy. The source noted that if Johnson tries to become Secretary General of NATO, he will face a French veto, as decisions in the Alliance are taken unanimously.
Note that the current head of the Alliance, Jens Stoltenberg, will leave his position in September 2023.
It was previously reported that five people were on the list of likely candidates for the post of NATO Secretary General instead of the current head of the Alliance, Jens Stoltenberg.
