The American President emphasized that he was “dedicated to the cause of survival, focusing on life and security.”
U.S. President Donald Trump has questioned the interpretation of Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty on the protection of NATO’s allies in the case of attack. The politician told Board Air Force One a aircraft to the NATO Summit in the Hague, Bloomberg reports on Tuesday, June 24.
When asked if the United States will follow Article 5 on the collective defense of NATO members, Trump replied that “it depends on your meaning of this article.”
“There are many meanings of Article 5. You know this, don’t you? But I’m trying to be friends, you know, I’ve been friends with many of these leaders, and I’m trying to help them,” said the President of the United States.
In request to explain his words, Trump replied that he was “focused on the cause of rescue in lives. I was committed to life and security.”
“I’ll give you the exact meaning (Article 5 – Ed.), When I get there. I just don’t want to do it behind the aircraft,” said the American leader.
Article 5 is the basic basis of NATO created after World War II. It provides for collective protection in case of an alliance attack.
Remember that Trump earlier said that all NATO countries should spend 5% of GDP defense, except the United States. Currently, NATO is regulating the biggest increase in defense costs from the Cold War.
