The Kremlin is using disruptions in Nord Stream to force EU leaders to reconsider harsh sanctions.
Russia is likely to keep vital gas flows to Europe to a minimum until the EU revisits its sanctions against Russia. Bloomberg wrote this on Tuesday, July 26, citing sources close to the Russian authorities.
Publicly, Russia has claimed technical problems such as a lack of paperwork and maintenance of the turbines have forced it to cut gas supplies in recent weeks. But in fact, according to people familiar with the leadership’s opinion, the Kremlin is using disruptions in the Nord Stream to force EU leaders to reconsider the painful sanctions imposed on the aggressor state.
The publication’s sources expect that the Kremlin and Gazprom will continue to find reasons to restrict flows, preventing European customers from boosting supplies needed to meet winter demand.
EU officials have already warned of major economic disruptions if flows do not improve and are urging consumers to reduce their use of the precious fuel.
Earlier, the European Commission said the European Union would face a major fuel shortage if Moscow completely cut off gas supplies.
