Hungary and Slovakia do not support penalties that limit Russia’s inexpensive energy.
Hungary and Slovakia decided not to support the European Union’s plan according to the 18th package of sanctions against Russia. It was said by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Hungary Peter Siyarteto, a Reuters report on Monday, June 23.
“We did this because the European Union wanted to ban member states, including Hungary and Slovakia, to buy cheap Russian natural gas and Russia’s cheap oil, as they did before,” he said.
Remember, on June 10, the European Commission offered a new package of sanctions against Russia. The package is aimed at Moscow’s income from energy, banks and military industries.
In response, the prime minister of Slovakia Robert Fitzo said Slovakia would not support the package of penalties if the EC could not find a solution to the situation that Slovakia would face if the block gradually refused to import Russian energy consumers.
To approve measures for penalties, unity in the block is required. The EU hopes that the 18th package of sanctions for Russia will be accepted at the next European Council meeting, which will be held on June 26-27 in Brussels.
