NATO allies have reached an agreement on increasing defense costs up to 5% of GDP, which is a positive signal for Ukraine.
NATO member countries have reached a compromise agreement to increase defense costs to 5% of GDP. This has been reported to the agency Interfax-Ukraine Diplomatic resources in the Hague, familiar with the course of negotiations before the climax.
According to the interlocutors, despite the objections from the Prime Minister of Spain Pedro Sanchez, who opposed the rising costs, the allies found a compromise on the eve of the climax, held on June 24-25.
The agreement reached is positive importance for Ukraine, as the mention of assistance from KYIV is contained in that paragraph of the final declaration, which involves 5% of defense costs. Thus, Ukraine’s support will also be considered in this indicator.
At the same time, Spain agreed with the Alliance on the exception from the request to spend 5% of GDP for defense.
“The costs of 5% will not be proportional and unnecessary. We greatly respect the legitimate desire of other countries to increase our defense investments, but we will not do it,” Sanchez said.
He added that Spain could fulfill all of its NATO obligations to HR for HR, which only spend 2.1% of its GDP.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump said that all NATO countries should spend 5% of GDP defense, except the United States.
Rutte also said that most European countries will increase defense costs. He called such an increase of “excellent news” costs and re -emphasized the need for a “more fair balance” in the United States.
Remember that in NATO they have recorded the greatest increase in defense costs since the Cold War.
