Near the Antarctic station of Ukrainian, academic Vernadsky, on the island of Galindez, a giant iceberg appeared.
Its length is -1285 meters, approximately matching the length of Kyiv’s main street -khreshchatyk. This was announced by the National Antarctic Scientific Center on its Facebook page.
The iceberg is about 90 meters wide and rises above the water to a height of up to 80 meters. In shape, this is the so -called Iceberg table – with a flat peak and almost vertical sides, similar to an ice island in the middle of the ocean.
“Now is my sixth winter in Vernadsky, and I have never seen the huge iceberg here. We watched him straight from the windows of the station, though he would change many ten -ten kilometers from our island,” said Alexander Poluden, head of the –30 Expedition of the Ukrainian Antarctic.
Scientists suggest that iceberg can stay away from one of the shelf glaciers to the south – George VI or Vilkins. Now they are about to watch its movements.
