Former German foreign minister Annalen Berobok was elected president of the UN General Assembly. The election took place on the afternoon of June 2. It was reported by Bild on Monday, June 2.
It is supported by 167 states – most members of the General Assembly. Berobok was the only candidate for this position.
In his first speech, the new chapter thanked the nations’ representatives for trust and emphasized that he was striving to be a “honest mediator” in the assembly work.
The president of the UN General Assembly leads the meetings, coordinates the body’s work, monitors compliance with procedures and presents an international level assembly. This is primarily a representative and position of the organization – the President does not make political decisions.
The UN General Assembly (UN GA) is the main directive body of the United Nations. It consists of representatives of all member states and a unique forum for a multilateral discussion of the entire spectrum of international issues provided by the UN Charter. Each of the 193 member countries has an equal voice.
The General Assembly makes the UN’s major decisions, in particular:
- The secretary’s appointment of general at the security council’s recommendation;
- Election of unstable members of the Security Council;
- Approval of UN budget.
The next assembly sessions continue from September to December year, and also gather as needed. Each issue is considered within the framework of special points or subparagraphs of the agenda – resolutions are adopted as results.
