Any ceasefire that allows Russia to maintain control over the occupied territories will only fuel more conflict, the president is sure.
Freezing the military conflict with the Russian Federation could lead to a larger military confrontation in the future. This is what the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal on Friday, July 22.
“Freezing the conflict with the Russian Federation means a pause that gives Russia a break for rest. They are not using this pause to change their geopolitics or abandon their claims to the former Soviet republics, ” he says.
The head of state compared Russia to “a sperm whale that swallowed two regions of Ukraine and now says: freeze the conflict”: “Then (Russia – ed.) will rest and in two or three years will take two more regions and again say: freeze the conflict. And so it will continue. One hundred percent.”
The head of state emphasized that the supply of multiple rocket launch systems by the West made it possible to radically change the situation at the front. And if earlier Russia fired up to 12 thousand artillery shells per day against 1-2 thousand, now Ukraine can fire up to six thousand.
Zelensky added that after the events of the past five months, Ukrainians do not want to negotiate with Russia.
“Society believes that all territories must be liberated first, and then it will be possible to agree on what to do and how to live in the next centuries. Our people are convinced that we can do it. And if we do it faster this, less people will die “, – he said.
“We would prefer de-occupation in a way that is not military and to save lives. But we deal with those with whom we have. Until they break their faces, they will not understand anything,” the President of Ukraine stressed .
Earlier, the president said that thanks to Western weapons, the Armed Forces of Ukraine managed to reduce losses at the front: now they are three times less than they were at the peak of the conflict.
