In Antarctica at the Vernadsky station, Ukrainian polarists installed a platform for launching radio receivers (sensors attached to the ball filled with helium, which rises to a height of about 20 km) to reduce the risk of damage to meteorologists.
This was reported on the Facebook page of the National Scientific Center of Antarctic.
It is noted that the launch of radio receivers designed to study the upper atmosphere in the region is usually carried out in bad weather, when the cyclone is going on, and the most valuable information can be obtained.
Therefore, when scientists removed the probe from the hangar, they had to go slippery uneven stones covered with ice and snow, and at the same time overcome strong wind and precipitation.
We begin three of them from difficult weather conditions, snowfalls and gusts of wind up to 22 m/s. There was a case when we all fell in turn, but completed a mission, ”recalls Valentina Garbarkhuk, a meteorologist from the previous Ukrainian Antarctic mission.
It was noted that until 1996, when the Academic Station of Vernadsky belonged to the United Kingdom, its scientists regularly conducted research with radio receivers. For this purpose, a special pavilion was built at a rocky height, where the process of filling with layers of helium is protected from wind and precipitation.
In the Ukrainian period, the station did not hold an atmosphere for a long time. But a few years ago, Ukrainian polarists joined the year of Polar Project (YOPP) in the international initiative, and in 2022 they resumed radio receivers in 2022.
To simplify the launch of probes, the expedition engineering detachment built a special platform on an airplane – a platform of 12 m on 4.6 m, which is held on 10 metal supports and has wooden floors.
A nation of support and construction took about three weeks. Now meteorologists are actively using the platform, so bad weather less prevents scientific discoveries, ”said NASU.
