Currently, France has spent about 2% of its GDP at military costs. However, by 2032, all NATO participants were called to bring this indicator to 5%.
French foreign minister, Jean-Noel Barro, said his country is willing to spend 5% of its GDP at military costs and safety costs. He said this on the edges of the NATO Summit in Antalya, reports on Thursday, May 15, Le Figaro.
Thus, he commented on NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte’s call to NATO countries by 2032 to allocate at least 3.5% of GDP for military costs in narrow sense, as well as 1.5% for greater safety costs, such as infrastructure.
“(French president Emmanuel) Macron has said that the purpose of 3-3.5 percent is right, because we are allowed to supply potential defense,” Jean-Noel Barro said.
He also suggested that this indicator according to France, currently spending about 2% of its GDP at military costs.
“The purpose of 3.5% is the right amount for the basic cost of defense. But it is accompanied by costs that contribute to increasing our defense capabilities that indirect defense costs, but should be realized, such as cybersecurity or military mobility,” Barro added.
Earlier in Germany, they said defense costs would significantly increase – to 5% of GDP, over 215 billion euros per year.
Remember that NATO has recorded the greatest increase in defense costs since the Cold War
