Finland is preparing to move to the Western European Standard railroad track – 1435 mm, the Finland Transport Minister said to Lulu in advance of a press meeting following an informal meeting of northern countries in Helsinki. It was reported by the YLE portal on Tuesday, May 13.
“Now is the best time for Finland to join the usual rut width. This is not the only question of Finnish, but a joint project of all Europe and NATO,” explained earlier.
He emphasized that the government should make a national decision to change the width of the track until July 2027. The plans of works to begin the north of the city of Oulu, located in the northwest of the country.
At the heart of the initiative is the need to strengthen the safety of supplies and mobility of the military, as well as the development of cross -border relationships with Sweden and Norway.
The European Union, in advance, can fund up to 50% of design costs and about 30% of construction costs.
“Of course, we are pragmatic and realistic – we will not know it in five years. We plan until the end of the decade, and perhaps in 2032 we will be able to start construction,” the minister added.
The meeting in Helsinki was attended by Transport Ministers of Iceland, Norway, Denmark and Finland. The leaders of the departments made a joint statement about the mobility of the military and supply security.
They emphasized the importance of Cross -Border military importance, population readiness and stability of supplies both in the approach of the northern countries’ transportation system, and in the developmental plans of national transportation systems.
