The German Chancellor has pledged to strengthen sanctions against Russia if this week has not reached the development of the war.
The European Union is ready to introduce more strict sanctions against Russia if this week has not been reached at the end of the war in Ukraine. It was said by German Chancellor Friedrich Mertz, Reuters report on Tuesday, May 13.
“We are waiting for Putin’s permission and agree that without real development this week, we would like to work together at European levels in a significant strengthening of penalties. We will consider other areas such as the energy sector, as well as the financial market,” the politician said.
The German Chancellor noted that the EU leaders agreed with the President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky, that he would participate in Russian negotiations in Istanbul this week, provided that the Russian Federation would stop bombing the civilian population in Ukraine.
“I believe that further compromises and concessions are no longer justified,” Mertz added.
Remember, on May 10, Germany, France, Great Britain and Poland called on Russia in a 30-day Truce, beginning May 12. In the event of disagreement with the Russian Federation, they threatened the fire of new strict penalties.
The German government said that if a Truce was not established in Ukraine by the end of May 12, then Berlin, along with European partners, would begin the process of preparing new sanctions against the Russian Federation.
