The Italian engineer has suggested a unique solution for Venice safety – to raise the city 30 centimeters by pumping salt water underground.

In the last century, the city fell 25 centimeters, while the sea level in the lagoon rose 30 centimeters. The engineer entered theinatini proposed an innovative way to solve this problem – to raise Venice, pumping salt water underground.
The main concept is to create a “floating” basis for the city, using a technology similar to that used to store gas in northern Italy. During gas pumping, the soil rises, and when it is selected, it lowers. The theater offers to act on the opposite side -to create a series of deep wells 10 kilometers along the perimeter of Venice to gradually raise the city by 20-30 centimeters.
The main challenge is to prevent the destruction of surface water. This is possible thanks to the thick layer of clay under the lagoon, which will create a type of sealed “pillow”.
If the project is implemented, Venice will receive an additional two to three decades to prepare for an increase in sea level, Tatini said.
