The US Congress turned to Secretary of State Anthony Blinken with a request to recognize Russia as a country that supports the policy of terrorism.
The American parliament is asking the government to recognize Russia as a state-sponsor of terrorism. This was reported by the American edition of Politico.
In particular, the speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, this week spoke to Secretary of State Anthony Blinken with such a request. According to him, if the government refuses, the Congress itself will do it.
“There is no legal reason why Congress cannot pass a law that effectively designates Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism,” an aide to one of the Democrats quoted the newspaper as saying.
The source also added that passing legislation by Congress is a more difficult path than the secretary of state’s decision. However, this will give the administration political cover.
Note that the US Senate may consider a resolution recognizing Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism. In case of a positive decision, it will be submitted for voting in the House of Representatives of the US Congress.
Earlier it was reported that the Verkhovna Rada supported the appeal to the House of Representatives and Senate of the US Congress to recognize Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism.
