Germany should be the basis of NATO in Europe – Steinmeier

Germany should be the basis of the North Atlantic Alliance in Europe and the largest supporter of Ukraine, defending the independence and future of Europe. On Monday, April 28, Federal German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier said at a ceremony in Brussels on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the country’s membership in NATO, UKRinform reports.

He emphasized that Putin challenged Europe, so it should be done more for his protection.

“Now, when Putin’s war against Ukraine is in full swing, and the United States is taking overwhelming pressure on the allies of this Europe, Germany should play a major role,” Steinmeier said.

The president noted that the most important task of the new German government is to strengthen Bundeswehr and invest in the defense industry. He assured that Germany would do everything possible to fulfill his obligations under plans in the NATO region.

Steinmeier added that badly armed Germany was a bigger threat to Europe than properly.

“And we will try to ensure that Germany with the armed forces and infrastructure to be the basis of conventional defense in Europe,” he emphasized.

As for Ukraine, he emphasized that Berlin will continue to remain Ukraine’s largest supporters in Europe, “defense of independence, sovereignty and future of Europe.”

Earlier it was learned that Denmark, Norway, Finland and Sweden were unanimous in efforts to prevent Russia’s potential aggression, even with the weakening of NATO’s support. This method is called “Plan B” if the alliance does not work.
