The Kremlin denied the request of Syrian authorities to issue former President Bashar al -assad in exchange for the presence of Russian troops in the country.

Syrian, temporary President of Syria al-Sharaa, said Russia has rejected the request of Syrian authorities to transfer ex-president Bashar al-Assad. He said about it in an interview The New York Times On Wednesday, April 23.

According to Al-Sharaa, Assad fled to Russia in early December. In January, Syria authorities turned to the Kremlin with the request to move it in exchange for maintaining Russian military’s existence in the country.

“However, Russian officials rejected our request,” he said.

This is the first public commentary of Syrian authorities about Moscow’s reaction to such a request. Nyt’s note that Damascus is still open for negotiations with the Kremlin.

“Russia is a permanent member of the Security Council. Syria weapons are completely Russian. There are many food and energy agreements that have been dependent for years. We must consider Syrian interests,” Al-Sharaa added.

He emphasized that his country may need Moscow’s support again.

“Until that time, we had no proposals from other countries to replace Syria weapons,” the temporary president explained.

Al-Sharaa added that Damascus is talking to Turkey and Russia in new agreements.

“Türkiye has a military presence in Syria, and Russia also has a military presence. We canceled previous agreements between Syria and other countries and in the process of developing new agreements,” he said.

It will also not exclude the purchase of new weapons in Russia or other states. At the same time, he emphasized: any new military agreement should guarantee that “Syria’s freedom, its security stability and the fact that any country is not threatening or at risk to other countries through Syrian territory.”

As you know, in early December 2024, the Syrian rebel forces successfully attacked the largest city in Aleppo, after which other regions quickly controlled. On December 8, the rebels in Damascus announced the capital of “free” from Assad, which escaped Russia.

Currently, two Russian military bases remain in Syria, but their further fate is unknown. Meanwhile, the Russians were partially exporting the weapons. Later, Syria’s new power canceled the investment agreement between the Russian company StroyTransgaz and the Port of Tartus.

It is now found that Syria’s new power during its first communication with the Kremlin delegation has passed a requirement for compensation, the media said. But the Kremlin did not comment on it.
