Puerto Rico Governor Pedro Pierluisi signed a law that amends Domestic Violence Act 54including the threat of mistreatment or cruelty to pets, it was reported on Tuesday.
Thus, Pierluisi signed the “Law for the Prevention and Suppression of Domestic Violence,” its author, the representative of the opposition People’s Democratic Party in the House of Representatives, Angel Matos, explained in a press release.
This law includes threat of abuse or cruelty to pets in conduct that is defined as intimidation and psychological abuse and typifies new aggravating circumstances, Matos explained in a statement.
“As part of the cases of domestic violence committed on our island, there have been various cases of abuse of animalsin which the aggressors brutally abused animals or pets with the intent to cause emotional harm to partners or ex-partners,” Matos said.
“With this law, we seek to solve this problem and establish the responsibility of those who attack not only their partners, but also pets who are part of the family,” added the legislator, who had representatives Jocelin Rodriguez and Eddie Charbonnier as co-sponsors of the measure.
