The corresponding decision of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation opens a way to closer relations between Moscow and the Taliban government, which came to power in Afghanistan after the abolition of American troops in 2021.
On April 17, the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation canceled the ban on the activities of the Taliban Terrorist Group. Reuters reported it on Thursday, April 17.
As mentioned, this decision will open its way to normalize relationships between Moscow and the Taliban government, which came to power in Afghanistan after the abolition of American troops in 2021.
The court’s decision was made after the appeal of the Russian general’s prosecutor Igor Krasnov. In December 2024, Russian Federation head Vladimir Putin signed a law that allowed temporary suspended ban on the activities of organizations recognized as terrorists if they stopped terrorist activities.
Russia considers cooperation with Taliban as a strategic essential for fighting groups, such as the Islamic State-Khorasan (ISIS-K), which is responsible for terrorist attacks at the concert hall near Moscow in March 2024, as a result of which 145 people were killed.
Although the Taliban is not recognized by the international community for violations of women and other restrictions, Russia gradually expands contacts with Afghanistan authorities, including diplomatic and economic relations.
Earlier, the Russian Ministry of Justice reported to the head of the Kremlin Vladimir Putin that the Taliban movement banned in the Russian Federation could be excluded from the list of illicit organizations.
