The Indonesian Ministry of Defense said there were no such appeals from the Russian side and, moreover, such proposals were not considered.
“We followed free and active foreign policy,” the Ministry of Freg Venas’s Press Secretary told reporters on Wednesday. “We are friends at all. The permission of one of the parties will lead to the consequences, and we do not want to draw on any conflict.”
Australia’s side also made clarity. Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles said that after negotiating with his Indonesian colleague Syafri Syamyamedin, he received confirmation of the lack of any plans to provide Russian aircraft with access to Indonesia infrastructure. He described media reports as inaccurate.
Earlier, the media reported that Russia had turned to Indonesia with the request to provide access to Manuhua Air Base on the Biak island in Papua province to place a military aircraft there. Australia said they are waiting for clarification from Jakarta and do not want to strengthen Russia’s influence on the Indo-Pacific region.
