Remembering does not quickly expand production due to the inability of manufacture and suffering with supply chains.
The European Missile Giant MBDA, the manufacturer of the famous storm shadow/scalp and aster, faces serious challenges in an attempt to accelerate Europe’s rearmament and the supply of Ukraine. The Financial Times reported this on Monday, April 14th.
Despite record demand and ambitious plans that double production in 2024, the company has no time for customers’ needs due to complex manufacture processes, infrastructure restrictions and stretched logistics between France and Italy. For example, aster missile passes several stages of assembly at different factories in two countries, which significantly slows down the process.
Company orders reached € 37 billion – this is the amount of work for almost seven years at the current speed.
General MBDA director Eric Berange recognizes that companies need to adapt to the “war economy”, where speed and volume play an important role. However, attempts to simplify production have found resistance from France and Great Britain, which has been seen in changing the threat to their own interests in a joint adventure.
Such problems will be “relatively easy to solve” if MBDA is an ordinary company, says Berange. But for the Cross -Border Defense Group, who needs to balance the interests of their shareholders – the Airbus and the British BAE system owned 37.5%, and the Italian Leonardo – 25% – as well as the military he served, was more complicated.
The MBDA, established as a Franco-British project in 1996, and then joined and Italy, remains a rare example of successful cooperation in defense of the European defense industry industry. However, analysts criticize the company for slow adaptation to new facts.
Currently, MBDA has invested € 2.4 billion to 2028, along with an aster missile, consisting of over 10 thousand components.
Aster has been reduced from more than three years to 2022 to little to two today. However, MBDA admits: due to the complexity of the design, logistics fragmentation and the need to maintain quality – acceleration has limitations.
The company is also trying to increase autonomy, buying major suppliers. In particular, in 2023, MBDA acquired Roxel – a solid -fuel rocket engine manufacturer to stabilize supply and protect resources from competitors.
Earlier it was reported that the European Union would not allow defense companies in the United States, Great Britain and Turkey to funding 150 billion euros until these countries conclude related security agreements with the EU.
