In Germany, the number of atheists for the first time exceeded the number of Catholics and Protestants together.
Of the 83 million populations, 38 million are registered supporters of one of the two largest church groups, while 39 million identify themselves as Konfessionslos – those who do not adhere to any religion.
The rest adhere to other beliefs or belong to other faiths. About 3.3 million followers have Islam, writes Digi24.ro.
This is partly due to the fact that society usually tends to secularize, especially young people.
In addition, confidence in the Catholic and Protestant peak was seriously shocked by a series of scandals, especially subjecting abuse of children committed by the clergy.
Another possible reason is the “church tax”: registered churches pay an additional tax of 8% or 9%, as well as additional property taxes and an increase in capital in some lands.
