On July 17, the President of Ukraine dismissed Prosecutor General Irina Venediktova and the head of the SBU Ivan Bakanov because of “hundreds of criminal cases on treason and collaboration activities of prosecutors, pre-trial investigations and other law enforcement agencies.”
Subsequently, Andrei Smirnov, deputy head of the President’s Office, explained that Bakanov and Venediktova had not yet been fired. They were eliminated so that they could not influence the investigation and identification of traitors to the SBU and the prosecutor’s office. In addition, internal investigations will be carried out in these bodies, and based on their results, the president will decide whether to apply to parliament to dismiss both officials.
For now, the duties of the Prosecutor General will be performed by Deputy Venediktova Aleksey Simonenko, and the head of the SBU will be First Deputy Malysh. Both are close to the Deputy Head of the Office of the President Oleg Tatarov and walked at his birthday party in August 2021.
