European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson held a meeting in Baku with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. As a result, a memorandum of understanding was signed on a strategic partnership in the field of energy, according to the European Commission’s website on Monday, July 18th.

In addition, thanks to the strengthening of energy cooperation, Azerbaijan is already increasing natural gas supplies to the EU from 8.1 billion cubic meters in 2021 to an expected 12 billion cubic meters in 2022.
The EU and Azerbaijan are also negotiating a new comprehensive agreement that will strengthen cooperation in a wide range of areas, including economic diversification, investment, trade and the full potential of civil society, while emphasizing the importance of human rights and the rule of law.
The EU-Azerbaijan Cooperation Council is expected to meet in Brussels on July 19 to review common relations and discuss potential areas of mutual interest for future cooperation.
