The EU and Azerbaijan have signed a strategic document

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson held a meeting in Baku with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. As a result, a memorandum of understanding was signed on a strategic partnership in the field of energy, according to the European Commission’s website on Monday, July 18th.

The document contains a promise to double the capacity of the Southern Gas Corridor to supply at least 20 billion cubic meters of gas to the EU annually until 2027. This will help Europe end its dependence on gas. Russia.

In addition, thanks to the strengthening of energy cooperation, Azerbaijan is already increasing natural gas supplies to the EU from 8.1 billion cubic meters in 2021 to an expected 12 billion cubic meters in 2022.

The EU and Azerbaijan are also negotiating a new comprehensive agreement that will strengthen cooperation in a wide range of areas, including economic diversification, investment, trade and the full potential of civil society, while emphasizing the importance of human rights and the rule of law.

The EU-Azerbaijan Cooperation Council is expected to meet in Brussels on July 19 to review common relations and discuss potential areas of mutual interest for future cooperation.

“Today, through a memorandum of understanding, we will open a new page in our energy cooperation with Azerbaijan, a key partner in our efforts to move away from Russia’s fossil fuels. We are not just looking to strengthen our existing one. cooperation, guaranteeing stable and reliable gas supplies to the EU through the Southern Gas Corridor We are also laying the foundations for a long -term partnership on energy efficiency and clean energy as we pursue the objectives of the Paris Agreement , ”Said Ursula von der Leyen.

He stressed that energy is just one of the areas where cooperation between the EU and Azerbaijan can be expanded.

Recall, on July 15, Azerbaijan announced the signing of an energy agreement with the EU. Baku hopes that this agreement will raise the country’s cooperation with Europe to a higher level.
