In January 2025, a couple of days before the inauguration of Donald Trump, the US government entered into a ban on romantic or sexual relations between American officials working in China and China.
According to APN, the policy initiated by the former US Ambassador to China – Nicholas Burns applies to diplomats, their families and contractors with admission to secret information. Exceptions are possible only for existing relations, provided that the State Department is approved.
In case of refusal, a person must stop a relationship or leave a position.
Prior to this in the summer of 2024, a directive was introduced to ban relations only with Chinese embassy workers.
The decision was made against the backdrop of anxiety about the use of romantic ties with Chinese special services to obtain confidential information and espionage.
