Only 37% of Russians admitted to the opinion that it would be best if everyone stayed in the country as before the 1985 perestroika. It was 10% lower than 2021, 17% less than 2000, and 21% less than 1995.

Russia’s propaganda of the Glory of the USSR and the criticism of democratic reforms will not achieve a significant impact. Part of the Russians who wanted to return to the Soviet era before Mikhail Gorbachev’s reforms began to reach a minimum level throughout Russia’s modern history. This was proven by the results of a survey conducted in March 2025 by the All -Russian Center for public opinion study.

Thus, only 37% of the Russians agree with the opinion, which would be better if everyone stayed in the country as it happened before the perestroika in 1985. It was 10 percentage less than 2021, 17 points less than 2000, and 21 points less than 1995.

Whereas 48% of respondents did not agree with the Soviet order restoring and did not want to return to that regime. For the first time since the polls, the number of supports of maintenance of the last Soviet period without radical changes dropped below the number of supporters of reforms.

At the same time, most Russians, especially 61%, believe that the repair, which is accompanied by the introduction of freedom of speech and the democratization of society, has brought more negative ones than the positive consequences. However, almost the same quantity – 62% – recognizes the need for these reforms, though they are conducted “unreasonable” and “non -highitro” – 49% of respondents issued such an answer.

It is interesting -the number of people who believe that they and their families who have won from the perestroika are growing. Now this figure was 31%, compared to 24% in 2010, 17% in 2000 and 12% only in 1999.

Experts believe that nostalgia for “stability” and the common way of life, previously dominated by the “perestroika” time assessments, gradually moving to the realization of the need for social changes. The Russians began to understand that changes were the only way to update and the ability to develop a society in which they wanted to survive.

The perestroika, declared by the last Soviet Secretary General Mikhail Gorbachev in 1985, was given for a gradual dissolution of the planned economy. Businesses received more freedom, cooperatives emerged, as foreign policy changed the course, which ended for decades of the Cold War.

Remember that before an entire war, the collapse of the Soviet Union was considered 33.5% of the people of Ukrainians worthy of mercy.
