The United States still hope that within a few weeks a wide truce in the Russian war against Ukraine can be achieved, despite the signs that the Kremlin is in no hurry to conclude an agreement on the eve of negotiations planned for the coming days.
It is reported by Bloomberg with reference to sources in the White House.
According to the sources of the agency, the White House seeks to conclude an agreement on a truce by April 20, which this year is Easter both in the Catholic and the Orthodox Church, but admits that this schedule can be changed from “big differences between the positions of two sides”.
US President Donald Trump promised to ensure the rapid settlement of the three -year war before he joined his position, but now progress in this matter is limited. In the coming days, US officials will meet separately with Russian and Ukrainian representatives in Saudi Arabia.
Negotiations in Saudi Arabia will be discussed:
- Technical details of the implementation and monitoring of a 30-day truce about the dismissal of energy facilities that the leaders of the Russian Federation and Ukraine agreed during separate telephone conversations with Trump last week;
- Potential expansion of a truce to navigation in the Black Sea.
I believe that we will soon reach a complete ceasefire, ”Trump told reporters on March 21, answering questions about the attacks that continue, despite the agreement on restriction of attacks in the energy infrastructure, which he announced after a telephone conversation with the Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.
The next day, Trump said that efforts to prevent further escalation of war are “under control” and can boast of their “good” relations with the leaders of Russia and Ukraine.
It is noted that Russia has undertaken maximalist requirements, including the cessation of weapons supply to Ukraine – a position that Kyiv and its allies rejected. According to the sources of the agency, the White House did not agree with the restrictions.
European officials are afraid that Trump’s desire for a diplomatic triumph will lead to the fact that he donates the interests of Ukraine, agreeing to the conditions that will make the country vulnerable to future Russian attacks. They claim that Putin takes time to get more and more success in Trump on the battlefield.
Until now, Russia imitates negotiations, talks about a possible world and a possible ceasefire, but they are not even ready to adhere to a ceasefire, as they promised, not attack, and not strike at critical infrastructure, said Litans in a recent interview with Bloombeg.
