The EU violated the traditional rules that require unanimous approval of all 27 countries to publish joint statements. The text that supported 26 states was annexed to other resolutions adopted unanimously, including Hungary.
According to European diplomats, this method is planned to be used in the future, and although Veto Hungary is taken into account, it is ignored, writes Politico.
Nevertheless, strict statements about the possible introduction of new sanctions against Russian energy and trading goods have a limited effect, since their sale is still required. Hungary continues to block all proposals to strengthen sanctions and close the ways of bypassing them.
Earlier, the EU did not agree to allocate 5 billion euros for ammunition for Ukraine, Bloomberg said with reference to unnamed European diplomats.
According to diplomats, while most of the 27 EU member states who met in Brussels on Thursday, March 20, united around military assistance, France and Italy are postponed with obligations for specific volumes.
Kallas suggested that the EU members provided Ukraine up to 40 billion euros of military assistance this year. The help will be voluntary, but the participants will encourage money or equipment in proportion to their economic status. After several countries refused, the discussion was narrowed to the ammunition component.
In addition, the European Union ceased to discuss the confiscation of frozen Russian assets. This is evidenced by the text of the EU summit of March 20, reports DW.
According to the EU legislation, Russian assets should remain immobilized until Russia stops its aggressive war against Ukraine and does not compensate for the losses caused by this war – the text adopted by the leaders of the EU countries unchanged.
