Despite the ban on public meetings, declared by the Governor of Istanbul, there are hundreds of people who have brought the city streets.
Turkish authorities stopped the mayor of Istanbul Ekrem Imamoglu, which is the main opponent of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The opposition party Chp (Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi) called it an attempt by a coup, and the protests exploded in many cities of the country. Reuters reported this on Wednesday, March 19.
CHP leader Ozgur Ploine condemned the actions of the authorities and said his party would support Imamoglu as a presidential candidate, despite persecution. He emphasized that Türkiye faced a “coup attempt”, directed against the future president’s candidate.
Despite the ban on public meetings, declared by the Governor of Istanbul, there are hundreds of people who have brought the city streets. Police were located in the area around the police station where Imamoglu was held, and blocked roads with special forces and bodies of water.
Protesters called the opposition’s detention “a blow to democracy.”
At Istanbul University, there was a doubt of students with law enforcement officials who tried to spread the rally, reports Halk TV. Despite the intervention of security forces, protesters exploded in police barricades and headed to a demonstration at Sarahan Park.
Similar Imamoglu support promotions are held by CHP offices nationwide.
Imamoglu was detained on March 19 on charges of corruption, bribery and relationships with criminal organizations. Authorities have opened two separate investigations where mayors have been accused of false tenders and managing a criminal group.
Opposition supporters consider these political allegations to be motivated and aimed at eliminating Erdogan’s main rival in the upcoming election.
Earlier, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Türkiye continued to strive for full membership in the European Union.
