Scientists from the German Institute of Astronomy Max Planck created the first detailed 3D -card of cosmic dust in our Galaxy of the Milky Way.
This was reported by the press service of the university.
Astronomers used: for their card:
- Data spectra 130 million stars removed by the Cosmic Telescope of the European Space Agency GAIA;
- The results of the spectral examination of the stars of the galaxy conducted by the specialized Chinese telescope Lamost;
- The neural network taught to generate model spectra based on data on the properties of stars and dust collected by the specified telescopes.
It is noted that this card will primarily help scientists who control space objects.
The fact is that the cosmic dust through which the light passes makes objects more red and weaker than they actually – it seems to look into the space through the dirty window: particles of cosmic dust absorb light more on the shorter lengths of the waves (to the blue end of the spectrum) and less on long waves (to the red end).
Dust makes distant astronomical objects more red and boring than they are, so a new card will become an important tool for astronomers to understand the essence of their observations, – scientists say.
The study also revealed the unexpected properties of cosmic dust – in regions with a high concentration of dust, the degree of weakening of light was stronger than expected, and the smaller wavelengths were absorbed much more effectively than longer.
According to researchers, this may not be an increase in cosmic dust, but an increase in the class of molecules called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons – the most common hydrocarbons in the interstellar environment, which could even play a role in the emergence of life. Scientists plan to check this assumption using future observations.
