Coal supplies from Kazakhstan to Europe over the past six months have increased by 38% – the maximum indicator since 2017.
Kazakhstan has significantly increased its coal exports in Europe and Asia through Russian territory. In January -July of 2025, transit supplies increased by 38% year – up to 6.7 million tons – the maximum indicator since 2017. For comparison: For the entire 2024, transit costs nearly 9 million tons. This has been proven by Argus agency data, which led to Russian proceedings Vedomosti.
Kazakhstani’s export by north-west Russian ports in the first seven months of 2025 increased 19% year after year to 4.1 million tons. This happened due to increased transshipment through the ports of UST-Luga, St. Petersburg and Vyborg.
At the same time, supplies by the Port of Taman increased the year almost double – up to 2.3 million tons of another 300 thousand tons of Kazakhstan, Kazakhstan placed by the Russian Railways Network on the Latvian port of Ventspils.
A significant increase of transit from Kazakhstan was observed against the rear of a reduction in Russian coal shipments to the ports of the northwest and south.
Export prices for Russian Energy Coal by the end of June this year have reached the minimums from the end of 2020 – early 2021, according to Center for Price Index (CCI) data. Thus, the cost of a ton of coal with a calorie content of 6,000 kcal/kg with a ship load on Tamani port at the end of June fell 22% from the beginning of the year, up to $ 63, and in the ports of the Baltic Sea -26%, up to $ 55. The falling prices of export prices led to decline in income.
At the same time, Kazakhstani exporters maintain positive profitability of supplies both through the Baltic Sea ports and through the Taman.
Transit growth is also facilitated by the fact that Kazakhstan is excluded from lists of European Union penalties, which prohibits transactions in Russian ports.
Experts believe that in August-December, an increase in coal transit from Kazakhstan will continue and, according to the results of this year, will exceed 10 million tons.
Remember, China will build two nuclear power plants in Kazakhstan. This was announced during the first Deputy Prime Minister Roman Sklyar. Currently, the development of justification and economic justification and design and estimate of the documentation is ongoing, so it’s too early to call the cost.
