Pope Francis has made another appeal to the international community because of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The pontiff asked for efforts to end the war in Ukraine, and expressed his sincere condolences to the Ukrainians who daily suffer from rocket attacks.
I always have a soul also with the long-suffering people of Ukraine, which is bombarded every day with rocket rain. Is it really incomprehensible that war brings only destruction and death, moving nations away from each other, killing truth and dialogue? I pray and hope that all international actors will really make an effort to resume negotiations, and not to feed the nonsense of war,” said Pope Francis.
Earlier in July, Vatican Secretary for Foreign Relations Richard Paul Gallagher did not rule out that the pontiff could visit Ukraine in August, but this would depend primarily on his state of health.
Recall that recently in an interview with Reuters, the Pope expressed the hope that after a visit to Canada in July, he could visit Moscow and Kyiv as soon as possible. After the outbreak of the war, Pope Francis was invited to Ukraine by President Volodymyr Zelensky, Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba, Mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschko, head of the UGCC Svyatoslav Shevchuk. According to the Ukrainian ambassador to the Vatican, Russia put pressure on the Vatican so that the pope would not go to Ukraine.
