Ontario provides electricity to Minnesota, Michigan and New York. Now it’s worth a quarter more expensive for Americans.
The Canadian province of Ontario on Monday, March 10, announced an increase of 25% of electricity costs for three American states. The decision was made in response to the duty introduced by US President Donald Trump, Bloomberg reports.
Prime Minister Ontario Dag Ford has announced the increase in electricity for 1.5 million American and business households in Minnesota, Michigan and New York, whose province provides electricity.
According to Ford, the increase will add nearly 100 Canadian dollars (approximately $ 67) per month to each American consumer account.
“I will clearly say that I will not hesitate to increase this collection, if necessary.
At the same time, the publication record that Ontario’s decision may be more symbolic.
“Prices in US electricity market markets, exchanges where provinces sell their electricity are based on short -term demand and offers. This means that consumers can choose many sellers and do not necessarily agree at a higher price,” the publication said.
According to Bloomberg, in 2023, New York imports about 4.4% of total electricity from Canada. And this percentage for Minnesota and Michigan is less.
Remember that on March 4, Trump’s new 25%duties for goods from Mexico and Canada entered strength, as well as doubling duties to Chinese goods up to 20%. However, Trump later signed a command, which until April 2 released many goods from Canada and Mexico from duties.
We added that China and Canada have introduced the appropriate role in American goods after US President Donald Trump’s decision to release a trade war against its largest partner.
