Schemes for cooperation with other EU members in securing a ban on Russia’s gas imports were also approved.
Latvian Saeima adopted in the last reading an amendment to the Energy Law introducing a complete ban on imports of natural gas from Russia from January 1, 2023. Delfi reported this on Thursday, July 14th.

In addition to amending the law, schemes have also been approved for cooperation with other EU members in securing a ban on Russia’s gas imports.
“This regulation in agreements with the regulatory authorities of another EU Member State will apply in cases where the Latvian operator of the unified system of delivery and storage of natural gas -AS Conexus Baltic Grid – has agreed with the relevant operator of another EU Member State on the establishment of a unified natural gas delivery system ”, the message said.
Previously, the Latvian government had conceptually agreed to reject gas from the Russian Federation. This is a reaction to Russia’s military aggression on Ukraine.
Note that since April 1, Russian gas has not been supplied to Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. In particular, Latvia receives gas from the Klaipeda liquefied natural gas terminal and the Inčukalns underground gas storage, where large reserves have accumulated.
