Van Gogh accidentally discovered self-portrait in Scotland

The self-portrait is one of a series of experimental self-portraits made by Van Gogh behind his earlier canvases while living in the Dutch town of Nuenen in 1883-1885.

Experts from the National Galleries of Scotland accidentally discovered a previously unknown self-portrait by Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh. The Guardian writes about it.

There is a self-portrait written on the back of the canvas Portrait of a female farmer wearing a white hat and hidden behind a layer of glue and cardboard. It was discovered using x-rays of the canvas before an exhibition dedicated to the Impressionists.

Restorers will try to restore the self-portrait while preserving the original painting.

Recall that the scene on Canvas Street in Montmartre was shown to the public for the first time in a hundred years.
