Previously, the Department of Bishops was exclusively male. Two nuns and a layman were ordained for five years.
Pope Francis appointed three women to the Vatican’s Department of Bishops. This is the first time such an appointment has been made in the history of the Roman Catholic Church. This was reported by Vatican News.
So, on July 13, the Pontiff introduced to the department the nun and Secretary General of the Vatican Government Raffaella Petrini, the nun and former rector of the Order of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians Yvonne Rengot, the laywoman and president of the World Union of Women’s Catholic Organizations Maria Lia Dzervino.
The Department of Bishops also includes 11 cardinals, bishops and priests.
It was noted that two nuns and a layman were appointed to the Department for five years. The committee usually consists of about 25-30 people.
It is their responsibility to give suggestions to archbishops for the names of priests who they think would be good bishops.
The list will be given to the Vatican nuncio or ambassador to the country, who will further investigate the man and forward his recommendations to the Vatican. Committee members from around the world meet in Rome almost twice a month and send their recommendations to the Pope, who makes the final decision.
It was previously reported that Pope Francis may arrive in Ukraine in August this year.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry believes that Pope Francis ’visit to Ukraine will strengthen his role in restoring peace on the land of Ukraine.
