The President of Moldova announced the need to re -arm the army in case there is a “tragedy, as in Ukraine.”
Moldovan President Maia Sandu said the country needs to re -equip the army in case there is Russian aggression. He said this on Wednesday, July 13, on the air of Moldova 1 TV channel.
“If Russia tries to attack us one day, what are we going to do – send an army to defend with hoe? Using hoe against aircraft?” said Sandu.
At the same time, pro-Russian opposition parties in Moldova believe that the supply of new weapons to the army will exacerbate the situation in the region and is contrary to the principles of neutrality.
However, Sandu noted that the government is obliged to ensure the protection of the country’s citizens, but the Moldovan army cannot do so today, “if the same tragedy happens as in Ukraine.”
Earlier, NATO said the Russian Federation had not yet threatened Moldova. Currently the Russian army is not strong enough to launch a new military operation.
It may be recalled that on June 23, the European Council granted Ukraine and Moldova the status of candidates for joining the European Union.
