The administration of President Donald Trump dissolves the working group to combat Russian oligarchs in the Ministry of Justice of the United States.
Reuters recalls that this group has been working since February 2022 and was involved in the imposition of sanctions against oligarchs close to the Kremlin. US Prosecutor General Pam Bondi explained that now resources will be sent to fight cartels and signed on February 6 signed an order to eliminate the initiative created after the Russia’s invasion of Russia.
We are talking about the target group of Kleptocapture, a special group that was engaged in sanctions and the persecution of Russian oligarchs.
The guardian writes that decisions are made as part of the priority of the department – the resources used to control sanctions and arrest the assets of the oligarchs will be redirected to combat international medicinal cards and criminal groups.
The target group Kleptocapture has reached:
- Promotion against the oligarch Olega Deripaska and the media Magnat Konstantin Malofiv for trying to circumvent sanctions;
- confiscation of yachts belonging to Suleiman Suleiman Suleiman and Viktor Vekselberg;
- The recognition of the US lawyer, who transferred $ 3.8 million to Vekselberg real estate.
The prosecutors who worked in the target group Kleptocapture will return to previous posts. The changes will enter into force within 90 days, after which they can be expanded or made constant.
Trump has repeatedly talked about the need to improve relations with Moscow. He also announced his intention to end the war in Ukraine, but he had not yet presented any specific plan.
The emphasis on the fight against drug cartels appeared after Trump recognized many such groups with terrorist organizations as part of a campaign against illegal migration and fentanil smuggling.
The reconstruction of resources will also affect the implementation of the FCPA corruption law, which allowed the US Department of Justice over the past decade by the largest international corporations. From now on, the main priority in corruption investigations will be the activity of medicinal cartels.
Lawyer Stephen Frank, who worked in the US Department of Justice, said that it was a radical change in the course:
This is a departure from traditional cases of corruption and transition to drugs related to drugs and violent crimes that have never been the main FCPA area.
