The United States Agency (USAID) will be combined with the US State Department, it will continue to provide humanitarian assistance, writes CBS News, referring to three US officials.
But the department plans to significantly reduce labor. Donald Trump appointed USAID US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The latter also confirmed. He became the acting administrator (director) of USAID. Rubio said that the most important programs will continue under the auspices of the State Department, reports New York Times
Some democrats sent a letter to Marco Rubio, which said that the USAID Union with the State Department should approve the Congress. They emphasized that the agency is divided, in particular, for the rapid deployment of foreign assistance to the United States.
USAID is the world’s largest donor. The agency provided 42% of all humanitarian aid monitored by the UN in 2024. USAID programs also work in Ukraine.
Earlier, the USAID Central Office in Washington was closed, and the agency’s employees in an electronic letter were ordered not to appear there.
On this night, more than 600 employees were blocked in the USAID computer systems. And those who still had access received emails that “according to the instructions of the agency’s leadership, the construction of the headquarters will be closed for staff on Monday, February 3”.
The logos and photos of USAID were removed from the walls of the building. And the main website of the agency and its pages on social networks stopped working.
Musk said that USAID should be closed, because “this is not an apple with a worm, but a bowl with worms without an apple. And we need to get rid of all this, because it is not subject to restoration. It is assumed that Trump can eliminate the agency and transfer its functions to the US Department.
