World Health Organization (WHO) claimed that the rise in infections COVID-19 proves once again that the pandemic is “far from over”. The institution argued that one of the largest public health emergencies internationally needed to be maintained.

“The new waves of the virus show once again that Covid-19 is far from over,” WHO Director Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in Geneva on Tuesday.

Number of cases registered with the agency United Nations increased by 30% in the last two weeks due to omicron sub-options –BA.4 and BA.5– and the lifting of sanitary measures. Faced with this situation and the increased pressure on health systems, WHO He urged governments to act with measures that have already proven effective.

“As the number of hospitalizations and cases of transmission of COVID-19 increases, governments must take measures such as the use of masks, improved ventilation, and detection and treatment protocols,” the director of the institution added.

“The virus is spreading freely, and countries are coping with the disease burden to the best of their ability,” he said, referring to the hospitalization of patients with severe infections and the growing number of people with long-term Covid.

The pandemic remains a public health emergency

The WHO Emergency Committee on COVID-19 met last Friday via videoconference and by unanimous decision of the committee determined that the pandemic remains a public health emergency of international concern, corresponding to the organization’s highest level of preparedness.

WHO director of emergencies Michael Ryan noted during the meeting that recent changes in testing policy are making it more difficult to identify new cases of Covid-19 and the evolution of the virus.

The committee pointed out that the reduction in detection tests, and therefore genome sequencing, “increasingly” makes assessing the impact of covid-19 variants more difficult.

“This makes it impossible to evaluate currently circulating variants of the virus and new ones,” he said. According to the committee, the evolution of the virus and the characteristics of new variants remain “uncertain and unpredictable.”

Covid cases up 30% in two weeks

Global cases of COVID-19 have increased by 30% in just two weeks, and in Europe, in particular, omicron BA.4 and BA.5 sub-variants are responsible for this new wave of infections, the WHO said today. World Health Organization (WHO).

In India, where the contagion COVID-19 caused over half a million confirmed deaths, a new sub-variant named BA.2.75 has been discovered and is being closely monitored by experts.
