The cable lies at a depth of more than 50 meters, so the specific type of damage can only be determined when repairs begin.
On Sunday morning, the undersea fiber optic cable of the Latvian State Radio and Television Center (LVRTC) was damaged, LSM said in a publication.
The monitoring system recorded delays in the transmission of data on the section Ventspils – Gotland. LVRTC continues to provide data services using other routes.
However, there may be a slowdown in speed, although this generally does not affect end users in Latvia.
Together with partners, LVRTC carried out testing and measurement of the network of equipment installed in Ventspils.
“At this moment there is reason to believe that the cable is severely damaged and the damage was caused by external influences,” LETA quoted LVRTC spokesperson Vineta Sprugaine as saying.
LVRTC informed the responsible agencies about the event. Considering that the cable is at a depth of more than 50 meters, the specific type of damage can only be determined when the repairs begin.
In connection with this accident, Prime Minister Evika Silina gathered the responsible ministers and heads of services. “We continue to work with NATO and the countries in the Baltic Sea region to clarify the circumstances and investigate the event,” he said.
We remind you that since 2023, ten cables in the Baltic Sea have been damaged, affecting Estonia, Finland, Sweden, Germany and Lithuania. In at least two incidents, ships have been recorded dragging an anchor to the bottom, damaging submarine cables.
