Elections in Belarus are held in conditions of political crisis, large-scale repression and, according to international organizations, are not free and undemocratic.
EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas called the presidential election in Belarus “an open outrage against democracy.” He announced this on platform X on the eve of January 25.
“Lukashenko has held on to power for 30 years. He will re-appoint himself (president of Belarus) in the next bogus election,” Kallas said.
In the presidential election in Belarus on January 26, in addition to Alexander Lukashenko, who is running for the seventh term, four more candidates will participate.
Three of them openly support the current government, and the fourth, Anna Kanopatskaya, advocates a “peaceful, civilized, democratic transition of power in the country,” but does not mention election fraud and repression. The names of the members of the election commissions are now classified.
Voting day for the presidential election has started in Belarus. The next presidential elections were supposed to take place no later than July 20, 2025, but they were postponed to January 26.
In addition to Lukashenko, Oleg Gaidukevich, Sergei Sirankov, Anna Kanapatskaya and Alexander Khizhnyak will compete for the post of head of state.
Elections in Belarus are held in conditions of political crisis, large-scale repression and, according to international organizations, are not free and undemocratic. No officially registered opposition parties or independent public organizations remain in Belarus.
The governments of several Western countries have already announced that they will not recognize the results of these elections.
