A new Ukraine-Nato center will help the alliance maintain its greater efficiency in Russia, a senior commander said.
The NATO-Ukraine Joint Analysis, Training and Education Center (JATEC) will start operations in the Bydgoszcz city in Poland in February. In it, alliance officials, civilians and military personnel of Ukrainians will discover the key aspects of modern warfare: unmanned systems, air defense, artificial intelligence and civilian resilience. It has been reported by Politico.
Admiral Pierre Vandier, Supreme Commander for Transformation of NATO, said that after three years of Russia’s widespread invasion, the questions arose about the lessons to be learned because of the opponent’s rapid adaptation.
He emphasized that the Ukrainian-Russian War was a unique example of the combination of modern technologies, such as drones and space communications, along with the methods of First World War-Trench fighting and artillery shelling.
“Ukraine army soldiers are resistant to difficult conditions, using both outdated equipment and the latest systems, making Ukrainian artillery highly effective and deadly,” Vandier emphasized.
The idea of the creation of Jatec was approved at NATO Summit in Washington in June 2024. Although Ukraine was not yet a member of the Alliance, the opening of the joint center was the first official institution to unite Ukraine and NATO.
The project also marks a strategic shift for the Alliance away from expeditionary missions and heading to preparation for a potential high-intensity conflict in Russia.
Initially, Jatec would have 70 employees, including 20 Ukrainians. The center will work under the leadership of NATO Command Transformation, which is responsible for preparing for future military threats.
Jatec will focus on the following aspects:
-
interaction between Ukraine and NATO;
-
civilian infrastructure protection;
-
Studying and opposing the weapons used by Russia in the war, including Lancet loitering munitions and glide bombs.
The acquired knowledge and developments were integrated into military exercises of the NATO Joint Warfare Center.
Let us remember that the Foreign Ministry said Ukraine refused to receive any alternatives to joining NATO, considering the “bitter experience” of the Budapest Memorandum.
