We are talking about ten Leopard 2A4 and twenty armored personnel carrier M113, which are in another state and will need modernization.
The Spanish Ministry of Defense is open to negotiations on the possible transfer to Ukraine of ten Leopard 2A4 battle tanks and twenty M113 armored personnel carriers, which are in storage. This was reported by the publication Infodefensa, citing sources.
The issue of the transfer of military equipment, “both stored and unused, and inactive” is currently being studied in response to repeated requests from Kyiv caused by Moscow’s military aggression.
It was noted that once the Leopard 2A4 and M113 became the property of Ukraine, the government of Volodymyr Zelensky would finance their renewal and modernization in Spain at the expense of the EU European Peace Fund.
To do this, you will need to sign contracts with Spanish companies.
According to preliminary data, the cost of the operation is from 5 to 15 million euros, taking into account repairs and transportation, as well as crew training. This amount does not include payment for the equipment itself, which will be provided by Madrid or sold at a symbolic price.
According to Infodefensa, the transfer of tanks and armored personnel carriers in Ukraine requires prior approval from Germany and the United States, which is required to change the end user of these weapon systems.
So far, Spain has delivered ammunition, personal protective equipment and light weapons to Ukraine.
Recall that in June the media reported that the Spanish authorities were ready to provide Ukraine with 40 Leopard 2A4 tanks and anti-aircraft missile systems. Later, information emerged that Berlin had banned Madrid from transferring anti-aircraft vehicles to the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
