Mexico refused to accept an American military plane carrying deportees from the United States.
Two planes were carrying 160 migrants to Guatemala. However, the US government was unable to land in Mexico because the country refused permission, writes Reuters.
Earlier this week, Washington reinstated the “Remain in Mexico” program, forcing non-Mexican asylum seekers to wait in the country until their cases are resolved in the United States. Mexico did not agree to this. Mexico is ready to welcome its citizens with open arms.
US-Mexico relations have become more tense since Trump took office, immediately declaring a state of emergency along the two countries’ shared border and sending 1,500 additional US troops there. The US President designated Mexican drug cartels as terrorist organizations, renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the American Gulf and threatened a blanket 25% tariff on Mexican goods.
Claudia Sheinbaum tried to avoid escalating the situation and expressed support for the return of Mexicans to the country. However, she did not agree with the mass deportations that continue in the United States. At the same time, the Mexican president is convinced that Mexican immigrants are vital to the US economy.
At the same time, the United States is suspending immigration programs, in particular the key initiative for Ukrainians, United for Ukraine.
The scope of the programs mentioned in the pause is enormous, and the decision will block the entry of immigrants fleeing some of the most unstable and desperate places in the world, the newspaper writes. In addition to Ukraine, the programs offered a pathway to immigrants from Cuba, Haiti and Venezuela.
Since September 2023, more than 150 thousand Ukrainians have taken advantage of this program.
Trump’s executive order also calls for new criteria to be reviewed against all temporary immigration programs, including family reunification initiatives and support for Central American minors.
Human rights activists regard the decision as a blow to humanitarian immigration, especially for people leaving the world’s most unstable regions, including Ukraine.
